Greetings from the Executive Director (March 2022)

Senior Center of West Seattle

This month I’d like to share with you how the Senior Center is working to address transportation and parking for our members.

We have heard from many about your difficulties finding parking in the Junction. The lot behind the Senior Center is now a paid parking lot, and free two-hour parking on the street continues to be hard to find. The programs at the Senior Center often keep your here longer than two hours. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to enjoy your time in our activities and classes — and also be able to stay for lunch!

Our Board of Directors is looking into long-term options for our members. One idea we are considering is having a shuttle that circulates around West Seattle, on a consistent route, that could pick up our members at designated locations. If you’re interested in participating in an ad-hoc Transportation Committee that will study solutions like these, please let me know. The commitment will be four months beginning in March.

In the short-term, here are some ways you can get to the Senior Center without a car:

  1. Hyde Shuttle: Free door-to-door van service available to adults 55+ and people with disabilities. Call 206–727–6262 and press 1 to make reservations or online at hydeshuttle.org.
  2. Metro Access Bus: Free service for people with disabilities; must pre-enroll. Cal 206–205–5000 or kingcounty.gov/depts/transportation/metro.
  3. Regular Metro Bus: The West Seattle Junction is an urban village, which means we have excellent bus service to our area. Play your trip at tripplanner.kingcounty.gov.

The days are getting longer, and I already have flowers coming up in my yard. Enjoy getting outside as spring heads this way.

Sincerely,

Amy Lee Derenthal
