When Jenny is at the Senior Center of West Seattle, you will always see her wearing an apron and a smile! Jenny Mayberry has been volunteering in the kitchen since January of 2017! She has continued to help our Chef to prepare lunches for delivery throughout this past year. One of the things she loves best about working in the kitchen is learning new cooking techniques from Chef Francisco. She has learned to cook different sauces, various ways to cook meat, Mexican food, and delicious tamales!

Jenny was born in New Mexico, and moved a lot while growing up. Jenny studied Marketing at Eastern Illinois University. She eventually landed in Minnesota where she worked doing sales for Kraft for 30 years. Her and her husband raised 3 daughters and a son there. In 2017, her husband took a job with Amazon, and Jenny was ready to come out West!

Jenny has previously volunteered tutoring Hispanic children, and also assisting with activities in an assisted living environment. She was inspired to help seniors after seeing the positive impact volunteers had on her mom’s life in her senior years. Jenny says she always feels better when she is “giving back, making a difference in the lives of people!” Jenny misses seeing the people coming in the Center for lunch. The work in the kitchen is busy, and even though there are not people eating in the building, it actually feels busier as they are producing more meals for delivery than they were pre-pandemic.

With her adult children and 2 granddaughters being spread out between New York, Washington, D.C., Arkansas and China, Jenny is uncertain where her next chapter may take her… While her and her husband are planning their next move, she will continue with her hobbies: volunteering, hiking, walking every day, reading, cooking classes, wine tasting and travel. We do know that wherever Jenny lands next on her journey and she finds her next volunteer post, they will be very fortunate to have her as a volunteer!

Best,
